A recent hantavirus outbreak linked to an expedition cruise ship has understandably raised concerns among travelers. With memories of the COVID-19 pandemic still fresh, it’s natural to wonder whether this is the beginning of something similar. The short answer, according to the World Health Organization, is no.

What Happened?

A cluster of hantavirus cases was identified among passengers on the MV Hondius, a small 147-passenger expedition vessel that was conducting a birdwatching voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde. This is an extremely niche, remote expedition operation, not a mainstream cruise ship. As of May 7, 2026, eight cases have been reported (five confirmed), including three deaths.

Critically, this outbreak did not originate on the ship. The initial cases involved passengers who had traveled in South America, including Argentina, before boarding. The virus was contracted on land and brought aboard, where the confined setting and close contact between passengers allowed limited spread of the Andes strain.

What the WHO Is Saying

During a press briefing on May 7, 2026, WHO officials addressed the situation directly.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, Director of Epidemic and Pandemic Management at the WHO, stated: “This is not covid, nor influenza. It spreads very differently.” She also emphasized: “This is not coronavirus. This is a very different virus that has existed for quite some time. This is not the beginning of a Covid pandemic; this is an outbreak we are observing on the ship, occurring in a confined area.”

She added: “This is not the same situation we faced six years ago. It does not spread in the same way.”

Dr. Abdirahman Mahamud, Director at the Alert and Response Coordination Department of the WHO’s Emergencies Health Programme, provided additional context: “We had a similar situation in Argentina in 2018-2019, where a symptomatic individual attended a social gathering that led to a lot of people getting infected. We are in a similar situation right now, with a cluster in a confined space and close contact.” He added that with proper public health measures, contact tracing, and isolation, the chain of transmission can be broken, and he does not anticipate a large epidemic.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted: “Given the incubation period of the Andes virus, which can be up to six weeks, more cases may be reported. While this is a serious incident, WHO assesses the public health risk as low.”

How Is Hantavirus Different from COVID-19?

The differences between hantavirus and COVID-19 are significant, and they’re the reason health experts are confident this will not become a pandemic.

How it spreads: COVID-19 was an unprecedented, highly contagious respiratory virus that can linger in the air and spread rapidly through casual contact. Hantavirus is well-known virus, primarily a zoonotic disease, meaning it spreads from rodents to humans through contact with infected droppings, urine, or saliva. Human-to-human transmission of hantavirus is extremely rare and requires prolonged, close, intimate contact. It does not spread through the air the way COVID does.

How rare it is: To put this in perspective, the CDC recorded just 890 confirmed hantavirus cases in the entire United States over a 30-year period from 1993 to 2023. A hantavirus outbreak has never previously been recorded on a cruise ship.

How fragile the virus is: Unlike COVID-19, hantavirus does not survive long outside a host. At room temperature, the virus remains viable for roughly 2 to 3 days. When exposed to direct sunlight, it loses viability within hours. It is easily killed by standard household disinfectants. This is a fragile virus that cannot persist in the environment the way COVID could.

How containable it is: Hantavirus outbreaks are typically localized and contained through standard public health measures like contact tracing and isolation. As of this writing, former passengers being monitored in five US states have shown no symptoms.

What Does This Mean for Your Cruise Plans?

This outbreak occurred on a single, small expedition vessel carrying 147 passengers on a remote birdwatching voyage, and the virus was contracted on land before passengers boarded. It is not indicative of a broader risk to the cruise industry. Major cruise lines operating in the Mediterranean, Alaska, Northern Europe, the Caribbean, and beyond are not affected by this incident.

If you have an upcoming cruise booked, there is no reason to change your plans based on this outbreak. The WHO has assessed the public health risk as low, and the situation is being actively monitored and managed.

As always, if you have questions or concerns about any upcoming travel, we’re here to talk it through with you.

What is Viking Libra? Everything you need to know about Viking’s groundbreaking hydrogen-powered cruise ship, launching November 2026.

Viking Libra is about to change how people think about cruising, and it’s genuinely a big deal for travelers who care about comfort and the planet. This hydrogen-powered small ship gives you a way to see the Mediterranean and Northern Europe with dramatically lower emissions than traditional big-ship cruising.

What Is Viking Libra?

Viking Libra is the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions for parts of its voyage. Classified as a small ship, she comes in at about 54,300 gross tons with 499 staterooms for 998 guests, keeping the experience intimate compared with megaships carrying 4,000+ passengers.

The ship just reached its “float out” milestone at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard in Italy, the point where the hull touches water for the first time and final outfitting begins. Delivery is scheduled for November 2026, followed by an inaugural season in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

How Does Viking Libra’s Hydrogen System Work?

Viking Libra uses a hybrid propulsion system that pairs liquefied hydrogen with advanced fuel cells, conventional engines, and large battery packs. The hydrogen feeds polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells capable of generating up to six megawatts of power, enough to handle both propulsion at lower speeds and the heavy “hotel” load for cabins, restaurants, and air conditioning.

Instead of running on hydrogen around the clock, the ship switches intelligently between hydrogen power, batteries, and traditional fuel depending on where it is and how fast it needs to go. Hydrogen will be used especially in and near ports, fjords, and other sensitive waters where cutting local air pollutants matters most. Viking Libra is also being fitted to plug into shore power where available, allowing her to turn engines off entirely when docked.

For travelers, the technical details matter less than the result: cleaner air, quieter operation, and access to destinations that may become off-limits to more polluting vessels in the future.

Why Viking Libra Matters for Sustainable Cruising

Cruise ships have been under scrutiny for emissions, especially in crowded historic ports and fragile regions like the Norwegian fjords and the Baltic. Viking Libra’s hybrid hydrogen system allows the ship to operate with zero emissions during key legs, dramatically reducing greenhouse gases and local pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulates compared with conventional diesel-only ships.

Because the zero-emission mode lets Viking Libra meet stricter environmental regulations, she can access environmentally sensitive areas that may eventually be restricted to more polluting vessels. Maritime analysts already see Viking Libra as a flagship project that resets what “best practice” looks like in sustainable ship design.

For guests, that translates into seeing iconic places while leaving a lighter footprint than older-generation ships. It’s the kind of forward-thinking approach that makes Viking stand out in an industry under increasing pressure to clean up its act.

The Onboard Experience: Small Ship, Big Comfort

Although the technology is cutting-edge, the experience onboard is classic Viking: all-veranda accommodations, clean Scandinavian design, and an adults-only, destination-focused atmosphere. With under 1,000 guests, public spaces stay comfortable and crowd-free, and the smaller size allows access to ports where megaships simply cannot dock.

Viking Libra’s hotel operations benefit from the hydrogen system and energy-efficient design, meaning quieter sailing during low-emission operation and less vibration than many traditional ships. For guests, that means smoother sea days, fresher air around the decks, and the satisfaction of knowing the ship’s technology is as forward-thinking as the décor.

And like all Viking ocean ships, the experience includes Viking’s signature inclusions: a complimentary shore excursion in every port, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, free WiFi, access to the thermal spa, and no kids under 18.

Where Will Viking Libra Sail?

Viking Libra’s first season is tailor-made for travelers who love culture-heavy itineraries.

Maiden Voyage: The inaugural sailing is a 9-night “Greek Odyssey” departing Piraeus (Athens) on December 3, 2026. Ports of call include Volos, Thessaloniki, Kusadasi, Rhodes, Santorini, Chania, and Nafplio.

After her Greek debut, Viking Libra will run additional Mediterranean voyages before repositioning to Northern Europe in early 2027. Scheduled itineraries include:

Viking Homelands (Bergen to Stockholm)

Into the Midnight Sun (North Cape and Norwegian fjords)

British Isles Explorer

Baltic Sea sailings

These regions, with their narrower waterways and strict environmental rules, are exactly where hydrogen-powered zero-emission operation makes the biggest difference.

What About Future Hydrogen-Powered Ships?

Viking is already planning a second hydrogen-powered ocean ship, Viking Astrea, due in 2027 using similar fuel-cell technology. That follow-up order signals that Viking Libra isn’t a one-off experiment but the start of a new class of cleaner ships. As hydrogen bunkering and shore-power infrastructure expand across European ports, the share of each voyage that can run on zero-emission power should grow over time.

This is Viking doing what Viking does best: leading the industry rather than waiting to see what everyone else does first.

Is Viking Libra Right for You?

For travelers, Viking Libra represents a new way to cruise:

Classic small-ship experience with polished service and deep-dive itineraries

Lower personal travel emissions compared with older, heavier-fuel ships

Future-proofed access to destinations that may restrict traditional megaships

Adults-only atmosphere with Viking’s signature inclusions

If sustainability is even on the radar for your next big trip, Viking Libra is the ship to watch. She offers a rare combination of small-ship comfort, serious destination depth, and the most advanced clean-energy system currently afloat in mainstream cruising.

Viking Libra: Quick Facts

What is Viking Libra? The world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship

When does Viking Libra launch? November 2026

How many guests does Viking Libra carry? 998 guests in 499 staterooms

Is Viking Libra adults-only? Yes, 18+ only like all Viking ships

What is Viking Libra’s maiden voyage? 9-night Greek Odyssey departing Athens on December 3, 2026

Is Viking Libra zero-emission? The ship can operate with zero emissions during portions of its voyage using hydrogen fuel cells

Luxury ocean cruising has a new benchmark arriving this summer, and it is worth paying close attention. Explora III, launching August 3, 2026, is not simply the third ship in Explora Journeys’ growing fleet. It is the debut of an entirely new class, the Evolution Class, and it represents the most ambitious design leap the brand has made since its first sailing in 2023.

For travelers who value space, sustainability, and genuine style over megaship spectacle, Explora III is the ship to know right now.

What Is the Evolution Class?

Explora Journeys launched with Explora I and quickly followed with Explora II, both earning strong reputations for exceptional space-to-guest ratios, fully inclusive pricing, and an “Ocean State of Mind” philosophy that encourages guests to genuinely unwind rather than chase scheduled programming. Explora III takes that foundation and builds upward, literally.

At 268 metres in length and 72,810 gross tonnes, the ship is 19 metres longer than her predecessors. Yet guest capacity remains capped at just 922 guests across 463 oceanfront suites, preserving the intimate, uncrowded atmosphere that defines the brand. The result is one of the highest space-per-guest ratios in the entire luxury cruise industry, and that number matters more than most travelers realize. More space means more comfort, quieter corridors, shorter waits at venues, and a pace of travel that feels genuinely restorative rather than rushed.

The Suites: Elevated in Every Category

Two Owner’s Residences anchor the top of the accommodation hierarchy, double the availability compared to Explora I and II. The first, designed by acclaimed architect Patricia Urquiola, is located aft on Deck 7 and spans over 3,000 square feet. It features a vast ocean-facing terrace, a private whirlpool, dining for eight, and custom Cassina furnishings that feel far closer to a private Mediterranean villa than anything you would expect at sea.

The second Owner’s Residence occupies the full width of the ship on Deck 8, delivering the same level of privacy and white-glove service from an elevated vantage point.

Beyond the top tier, Ocean Penthouses now represent nearly a quarter of all suites, Ocean Residences has expanded significantly, and select Cove Residences now include private outdoor whirlpools. Every suite category comes standard with floor-to-ceiling windows, a private terrace, a walk-in wardrobe, heated bathroom floors, and butler-level service throughout.

For guests who have sailed Explora I or II and loved their suite experience, Explora III does not ask you to trade down anywhere. Every category has been thoughtfully elevated.

New Dining Venues Worth the Voyage Alone

Explora III retains fleet favorites Sakura, Marble and Co. Grill, and Anthology while introducing two exclusive Evolution Class additions. Shore Club on 11 brings a relaxed, beach-club energy with seasonal coastal Mediterranean flavors set within The Conservatory. It is the kind of spot where you can drift in for a long, unhurried lunch and watch the ocean go by.

The Chef’s Table offers something more personal: a bespoke tasting journey crafted in direct collaboration with the culinary team, designed for guests who want a genuine conversation with what is on their plate rather than a formulaic tasting menu experience.

All dining across the ship remains fully inclusive (save for Anthology’s specialty tasting dinner). There are no surcharge venues, no fixed seating times, and no reservation fees. You eat where you want, when you want. That policy continues to be one of the clearest differentiators between Explora Journeys and competitors who still rely on upcharge dining to pad their margins.

The First LNG-Powered Ship in the Fleet

Explora III is the first Explora Journeys vessel powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), reducing sulphur oxide emissions by nearly 100% and nitrogen oxides by up to 85% compared to conventional marine fuel.

What makes this genuinely meaningful rather than just a marketing talking point is that the ship’s engines are designed to transition to bio-LNG and synthetic LNG as those fuels scale commercially. Explora III is built with the future in mind, not just the regulatory requirements of today. For luxury travelers who are increasingly asking real questions about the environmental footprint of their voyages, this is a substantive answer.

Where Is Explora III Sailing?

The inaugural season maps out a compelling geographic arc that showcases exactly what Explora Journeys does best: long, immersive itineraries through regions that reward slow, attentive exploration.

August 3, 2026: Maiden voyage from Barcelona to Lisbon, calling at Ibiza, Cádiz, and Tangier

Late summer 2026: Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea

September 2026: A transatlantic crossing via Iceland and Greenland, arriving in Quebec City

Winter 2026 through 2027: Miami, Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Pacific Coast voyages

The Iceland and Greenland Atlantic crossing deserves special mention. This is the kind of itinerary that simply does not exist at this level of luxury on any other vessel. Remote, visually stunning, and genuinely off the beaten path for a ship of this caliber, it is likely to be one of the most talked-about sailings of the year. Availability on that voyage will not last long.

Why Explora III Belongs on Your Radar Right Now

Inaugural sailings on a debut class ship at the top tier of luxury have a track record of selling well ahead of departure. All fares are all-inclusive: dining, premium beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities, wellness access, and concierge services are all built into the price from the start. There are no unpleasant surprises at checkout.

Explora Journeys has built a loyal following quickly, and Explora III raises the stakes with better suites, a larger ship with no loss of intimacy, new dining concepts, and a greener propulsion system. Whether you are a returning Explora guest or considering the brand for the first time, this is the right moment to take a serious look.

Contact our team today to check availability and secure the cabin category you want before the Evolution Class fills. Explora III sets a new standard in luxury ocean travel, and you should be on it.

If you’ve been thinking about a European river cruise with Viking, 2026 just became the most exciting year to book. The world’s most recognized river cruise brand has taken delivery of its newest Longship, Viking Eldir, and it’s just the beginning of a dramatic fleet expansion that will reshape Viking’s product through 2028 and beyond.

Meet Viking Eldir: The First of Ten New Ships in 2026

Viking Eldir officially joined the Viking fleet on March 25, 2026, setting sail on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers as the company’s newest Longship. Named after Eldir, the “fire-stoker” servant of Norse sea giant Ægir, the ship carries 190 guests across 95 staterooms and is purpose-built to navigate one of the most iconic river routes in the world.

Like all Viking Longships, Eldir features the signature touches that have made Viking the gold standard in river cruising: clean Scandinavian design, an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace, a space-saving square bow, true two-room suites, and an asymmetric corridor layout that gives every guest a better view. This isn’t a departure from Viking’s formula – it’s a refinement of it, with the latest design innovations baked in from the keel up.

Eldir will sail Viking’s most beloved itineraries, including the Rhine Getaway, the iconic Grand European Tour, Passage to Eastern Europe, European Sojourn, and the beloved Christmas on the Rhine – all routes that sell out fast and are already booking for 2026 and into 2027.

Ten New Ships by End of 2026 Then 22 More by 2028

What makes this moment truly significant for travelers isn’t just one new ship. Viking Eldir is the first of 10 brand-new river ships launching before the end of 2026. Five of those are Rhine/Main/Danube sister ships: Viking Dagur, Viking Haki, Viking Halogi, Viking Rota, and Viking Sjofn. The fleet will also welcome the Viking Fjolvar, a slightly smaller 168-guest ship designed specifically for the Seine, opening up new itineraries through the heart of France.

And it doesn’t stop there. Viking has committed firm orders for 22 additional river ships by 2028, which will bring its total river fleet to an extraordinary 112 ships. Paired with 10 new ocean ships and 2 new expedition ships by 2031, Viking’s overall footprint will grow to 25 ocean and expedition vessels by that year.

This level of investment is almost unheard of in the premium travel space. What it signals to travelers: Viking is betting heavily on sustained demand for thoughtful, discovery-focused river journeys, and it’s scaling up capacity to match.

What New Ships Mean for Travelers Right Now

When a major cruise line adds this many new ships simultaneously, it creates both opportunity and urgency:

More availability. Ten new ships means more departure dates, more itinerary options, and more room at exclusive docking locations that Viking has secured along Europe’s great rivers. If you’ve been waitlisted or priced out in the past, 2026–2027 open up real possibilities.

Freshest hardware on popular itineraries. Grand European Tour guests in late 2026 may find themselves aboard one of the brand-new Longships: updated cabins, the latest design features, and that new-ship shine. For seasoned Viking guests, that’s a meaningful upgrade.

Early booking still wins. Despite expanded capacity, Viking’s most popular sailings – particularly summer Rhine departures and Christmas on the Rhine – fill up quickly. Plan 12–18 months out, especially for peak dates.

The Seine gets new life. Viking Fjolvar’s Seine debut is notable. A smaller, more intimate 168-guest ship on that route creates a refined experience through Normandy, Paris, and Giverny.

Why This Matters for First-Time River Cruisers

If you’ve never taken a river cruise, or you’ve been on the fence, Viking’s fleet growth makes 2026–2027 a compelling window. More ships means more competitive availability in some markets, fresher vessels, and the confidence that comes from booking with a company that is clearly expanding, not contracting. Viking currently operates more than 100 ships across rivers, oceans, and expedition routes, and with 22 river ships on order for 2028, that lead is only growing.

Ready to Explore the Rhine, Danube, or Seine?

Whether you’re dreaming of castles along the Rhine, Christmas markets at Cologne, or Monet’s gardens along the Seine, the next two years offer more Viking departures on newer ships than ever before. Contact us today to find the best 2026 or 2027 Viking sailing for you before peak dates fill!

Is Oceania Cruises adults-only? Yes! Here’s everything you need to know about the new policy, what it means for your cruise, and why this change is great news for luxury travelers.

Oceania Cruises has officially announced a transition to an adults-only experience, effective January 7, 2026. All new reservations moving forward will require guests to be 18 years or older, marking a significant shift for one of the most celebrated luxury cruise lines in the industry.

This isn’t a surprise move for those who know Oceania well. The cruise line has always attracted a sophisticated, mature traveler demographic, and this policy change simply formalizes what the onboard atmosphere has always been: tranquil, refined, and focused on culinary excellence and destination immersion.

Why Is Oceania Cruises Going Adults-Only?

The short answer? Their guests asked for it.

Oceania Cruises conducted extensive research over several years, gathering feedback from loyal repeat guests, travel advisors, and new-to-brand travelers. The message was consistent: guests choose Oceania for its serene atmosphere, sophisticated service, and unhurried pace. These are qualities highly valued by mature, affluent travelers who want a peaceful escape at sea.

“Our guests have consistently shared that the tranquil environment aboard our ships is one of the primary reasons they return time and time again,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises. “By transitioning to an adults-only experience, we are enhancing the very essence of the Oceania Cruises journey – one defined by sophistication, serenity and discovery.”

Nathan Hickman, Chief Commercial Officer of Oceania Cruises, put it even more directly in an interview with Travel + Leisure: “This is something that was initiated and driven by our guests. We have the luxury of not having to be all things to all people. We think this is a differentiator.”

What Does This Mean for Existing Bookings?

If you’ve already booked an Oceania cruise that includes travelers under 18, don’t worry. All existing reservations made prior to January 7, 2026 will be fully honored. Families with children already scheduled to sail will be welcome on board as planned.

As Hickman noted, “This is a transition, not a hard stop.”

The adults-only policy applies only to new bookings made on or after January 7, 2026. It’s a considerate approach that ensures no one is caught off guard or forced to change their travel plans.

Which Oceania Ships Are Adults-Only?

All of them. The adults-only policy applies across the entire Oceania Cruises fleet:

Oceania Regatta

Oceania Insignia

Oceania Nautica

Oceania Sirena

Oceania Marina

Oceania Riviera

Oceania Vista

Oceania Allura (launched 2025 – see our firsthand review here)

Oceania Sonata (launching August 2027)

The upcoming Oceania Sonata is particularly noteworthy. As the first vessel in the new Sonata Class, she’ll be adults-only from her very first sailing. Sales for Sonata open later this month, and every voyage will feature the refined, 18+ atmosphere from day one.

A Perfect Fit for Oceania’s Brand Identity

Let’s be honest: Oceania Cruises has never been a family-focused cruise line. There are no waterslides, no kids’ clubs, no character meet-and-greets. The line’s identity has always centered on exceptional cuisine, destination-rich itineraries, and an intimate onboard experience aboard smaller ships carrying 1,250 guests or fewer.

The typical Oceania guest is 55 years or older, well-traveled, and passionate about food and cultural exploration. They’re looking for a peaceful voyage where they can enjoy a leisurely breakfast on their veranda, spend the afternoon exploring a boutique port, and end the day with an exquisite meal at one of the ship’s specialty restaurants, all included in the fare.

This adults-only transition simply aligns the official policy with the reality of who sails Oceania and what they’re looking for.

What’s Included on an Adults-Only Oceania Cruise?

One of the best things about Oceania Cruises is the “Your World Included” value promise. Unlike many cruise lines that nickel-and-dime guests, Oceania includes an impressive array of amenities in every cruise fare:

All specialty restaurants including Jacques, Red Ginger, Polo Grill, and Toscana

Shipboard gratuities for stateroom attendants, butlers, and dining staff

Unlimited Starlink WiFi throughout the ship

Specialty coffees, sodas, and cold-pressed juices

Still and sparkling Vero Water

In-room dining available 24 hours

Fruit smoothies, gelato, and artisan ice cream

Group fitness classes

Laundry services

Plus, guests can choose between complimentary wine and beer during lunch and dinner, or a generous shore excursion credit of up to $600 per person depending on voyage length.

When you combine these inclusions with an adults-only atmosphere, you get a cruise experience that truly feels like a luxury escape rather than a floating theme park.

How Does Oceania Compare to Other Adults-Only Cruise Lines?

Oceania joins a select group of cruise lines offering adults-only experiences. Viking has long been known for its 18+ policy across ocean, river, and expedition ships. Virgin Voyages also prides themselves on being an adult only, though more active & outgoing, experience.

What sets Oceania apart is its culinary focus. The line holds the title of “The Finest Cuisine at Sea” and is the only cruise line with two Master Chefs of France (Maîtres Cuisiniers de France) overseeing its culinary program. For food-focused travelers who also want a peaceful, adults-only environment, Oceania occupies a unique space in the market.

Having sailed aboard Oceania Allura during her pre-inaugural voyage, we experienced the onboard atmosphere firsthand. It’s refined without being stuffy, relaxed without being casual. The adults-only policy will only enhance what’s already one of the most pleasant cruise experiences available.

Is This the Right Cruise Line for You?

If you’re looking for a luxury cruise experience with exceptional dining, fascinating itineraries, and a peaceful onboard atmosphere free from the energy of younger travelers, Oceania Cruises is now an even better fit than before.

The adults-only policy is ideal for:

Couples seeking a romantic getaway

Solo travelers who appreciate quiet sophistication

Food and wine enthusiasts

Retirees and empty nesters

Anyone who values a serene, unhurried pace at sea

Oceania Adults-Only: Quick Facts

When did Oceania Cruises become adults-only? January 7, 2026 for all new bookings

What is the minimum age for Oceania Cruises? 18 years old

Are existing bookings with children affected? No, all reservations made before January 7, 2026 will be honored

Which Oceania ships are adults-only? All ships in the fleet, including the upcoming Oceania Sonata

Is Oceania Sonata adults-only? Yes, from her first sailing in August 2027

What are the new restaurants on Oceania Sonata? Here’s everything we know about La Table and Nikkei Kitchen, debuting August 2027.

Oceania Cruises has long held the title of serving “The Finest Cuisine at Sea,” and with the upcoming debut of Oceania Sonata in August 2027, the luxury cruise line is doubling down on that promise. The first vessel in the all-new Sonata Class will introduce two never-before-seen dining experiences that push the boundaries of what’s possible in shipboard gastronomy: La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France and Nikkei Kitchen.

These additions represent more than just new restaurants. They signal a bold new chapter for a cruise line that has built its entire identity around culinary excellence and destination-rich itineraries.

Having recently sailed aboard Oceania Allura during her pre-inaugural voyage, we experienced firsthand why Oceania has earned its reputation for exceptional dining. From the veal Milanese at Toscana to the olive oil sommelier service and perfectly prepared sea bass at Red Ginger, every meal reinforced why food-focused travelers choose Oceania over other premium cruise lines. The announcement of La Table and Nikkei Kitchen suggests that Oceania Sonata will raise that bar even higher.

La Table: The Only Restaurant at Sea Endorsed by the Master Chefs of France

La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France is being billed as “the most exclusive fine-dining restaurant at sea,” and the credentials back up that claim. It will be the only restaurant at sea approved by the Maîtres Cuisiniers de France (MCF), the prestigious institution dedicated to promoting French culinary arts for over a century.

What makes this even more remarkable is that Oceania’s executive culinary directors, Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale, have both been inducted into the MCF. This makes Oceania the only cruise line in the world with two Master Chefs of France overseeing its culinary program. That level of expertise doesn’t exist anywhere else on the water.

The intimate 18-seat venue will feature a rotation of menus created by Chefs Quaretti and Barale in collaboration with specially invited Master Chefs of France from around the world. A wine experience surcharge will apply for La Table, setting it apart from Oceania’s other included specialty restaurants.

For those seeking the ultimate indulgence, La Table will also host the Dom Pérignon Experience, a six-course tasting menu paired with three vintage champagnes from the legendary house.

Chef Quaretti shared his passion for the project: “These restaurants are not just simply new onboard venues; they are the embodiment of Chef Barale’s and my shared dedication to our culinary craft, and we are so excited to share more about these special experiences in the coming months. La Table has allowed us to create a dining experience that honours the heritage of French gastronomy, a cuisine that we are passionate about, and propels it forward. With the addition of Nikkei Kitchen, we’re able to celebrate bold, global flavours in unexpected, fresh ways.”

Nikkei Kitchen: Where Peru Meets Japan

The second new concept, Nikkei Kitchen, draws inspiration from a fascinating culinary tradition that emerged in the late 19th century when Japanese immigrants settled in Peru. They began adapting traditional Japanese recipes with native Peruvian ingredients, and an entirely new cuisine was born. Now Oceania is bringing this dynamic flavor profile to sea.

Developed in collaboration with chef Gustavo Sugay, who brings more than 20 years of experience in Nikkei cuisine, the menu will highlight fresh seafood, bright citrus, umami-rich soy-based sauces, and the distinctive heat of Peruvian peppers. Sugay is no stranger to Oceania guests; he has already introduced a collection of 12 Nikkei dishes to the line’s signature pan-Asian restaurant, Red Ginger, over the past year. The dedicated Nikkei Kitchen aboard Sonata represents the natural evolution of that successful experimentation.

The restaurant’s bright and airy interior will feature a modern, open kitchen design that echoes the fresh, light dishes served each evening. It’s a space built to celebrate the time-honored customs of both Peruvian and Japanese cultures while embracing culinary experimentation.

Nikkei Kitchen will be a capacity-controlled experience that remains part of Oceania’s always-included specialty dining options, available on a first-come basis with no reservations required. This accessibility reflects the cruise line’s commitment to delivering exceptional value alongside exceptional food.

Oceania: Building on a Legacy of Culinary Excellence

Oceania Sonata will feature a total of twelve dining venues, blending beloved favorites with these innovative new concepts. In addition to La Table and Nikkei Kitchen, returning restaurants include Jacques, the sophisticated French restaurant that has become a fleet favorite; Red Ginger, serving pan-Asian cuisine with bold flavors; Polo Grill, the classic American steakhouse; and Toscana, featuring Italian specialties in an elegant setting. The elegant Grand Dining Room will continue to serve as the ship’s main restaurant, offering open-seating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Casual options round out the lineup with venues like Terrace Cafe, Waves, and the popular Baristas coffee bar.

Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises, emphasized the significance of these additions: “Oceania Sonata represents an incredible opportunity to reimagine the future of our culinary programme, while still offering the culinary concepts our guests know and love. La Table and Nikkei Kitchen are emblematic of what sets Oceania Cruises apart, thanks to our ability to pair world-class culinary talent with the creative freedom that results in unforgettable dining experiences. These new culinary concepts reflect our continued commitment to innovation, and our commitment to serve The Finest Cuisine at Sea.”

The Sonata Class: A New Era for Oceania Cruises

Oceania Sonata

Oceania Sonata marks the beginning of an ambitious expansion for the luxury cruise line. As the first of four Sonata Class vessels scheduled for delivery in 2027, 2029, 2032, and 2035, this ship represents the next evolution of Oceania’s small-ship luxury experience. At 1,390 guests, these will be the largest ships in the Oceania Cruises fleet while still maintaining the intimate atmosphere that loyal guests have come to expect.

The vessel is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, continuing a partnership that has produced some of the most acclaimed luxury cruise ships afloat, including Oceania Marina, Oceania Riviera, Oceania Vista, and the recently launched Oceania Allura. When Oceania Sonata debuts in August 2027, she will become the ninth vessel in the fleet and set new standards for what guests can expect from upper-premium cruising.

Thirty percent of staterooms aboard Oceania Sonata will be suites, offering even more guests the opportunity to experience the highest levels of onboard luxury and personalized service. The ship will also feature new suite categories and expanded casual dining areas, responding to guest feedback about wanting more relaxed dining options on longer voyages.

Your World Included: What’s Included on Oceania Cruises?

What makes Oceania’s culinary program even more compelling is the cruise line’s “Your World Included” value promise. Unlike many cruise lines that charge premiums for specialty dining, Oceania includes all of its gourmet restaurants in the cruise fare, meaning guests can dine at venues like Nikkei Kitchen, Jacques, Red Ginger, Polo Grill, and Toscana without paying a penny extra. (La Table, with its exclusive MCF endorsement and intimate 18-seat format, will carry a wine experience surcharge.)

The inclusive experience extends well beyond dining. Here’s what’s included on every Oceania Cruises voyage:

All specialty restaurants (except La Table on Sonata)

Shipboard gratuities for stateroom attendants, butlers, and dining staff

Unlimited Starlink WiFi throughout the ship

Specialty coffees, sodas, and cold-pressed juices

Still and sparkling Vero Water

In-room dining available 24 hours

Fruit smoothies, gelato, and artisan ice cream

Group fitness classes

Laundry services (self-service for all guests; full service for suite guests)

Additionally, guests can choose one of two curated amenities: complimentary wine and beer by the glass during lunch and dinner, or a generous shore excursion credit of up to $600 per guest depending on voyage length. This flexibility allows travelers to customize their Oceania Cruises experience based on their personal preferences.

Based on a 10-day cruise, Oceania estimates guests receive always-included amenities valued at more than $1,800 per stateroom when compared to other premium cruise lines. That’s real value that enhances every aspect of the voyage.

Why Choose Oceania Cruises? Destination-Focused Luxury

While the culinary program rightfully draws attention, Oceania Cruises has built its reputation on more than just exceptional food. The cruise line’s eight small ships (soon to be nine with Oceania Sonata) call on more than 600 ports across 100+ countries on all seven continents. From marquee cities to boutique destinations that larger ships simply cannot reach, Oceania’s itineraries are designed for travelers who want to truly experience the world.

The smaller ship size, typically carrying a maximum of 1,250 guests on current Oceania vessels, creates an intimate onboard atmosphere with exceptional guest-to-crew ratios. This translates to personalized service, shorter lines, and a more relaxed pace throughout the voyage. It’s a stark contrast to the mega-ships carrying 5,000+ passengers, and it’s exactly what discerning travelers are looking for.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of La Table and Nikkei Kitchen aboard Oceania Sonata demonstrates that even after two decades of culinary leadership, Oceania Cruises continues to innovate and push boundaries. For food-focused travelers who appreciate fine dining as an integral part of their vacation experience, these new concepts offer compelling reasons to book early for the August 2027 maiden voyage.

With the Sonata Class representing a multi-year investment in four new vessels, Oceania is clearly positioning itself for long-term growth in the luxury cruise segment. The combination of groundbreaking culinary concepts, generous inclusions, destination-rich itineraries, and intimate ship design creates a compelling value proposition that stands apart in today’s cruise market.

Whether you’re drawn by the promise of Dom Pérignon paired with dishes crafted by Master Chefs of France, curious about the bold flavors of Nikkei cuisine, or simply looking for a luxury cruise experience that includes what matters most, Oceania Sonata is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated ship debuts of 2027.

The cruise line known for culinary excellence just revealed details about Oceania Sonata, the first vessel in their all-new Sonata Class. Here’s what travelers need to know about this 2027 debut.

Oceania Cruises dropped a major announcement this week: Oceania Sonata, their ninth ship and the flagship of an entirely new vessel class, will launch in August 2027. For travelers who’ve been following the brand’s evolution from their original intimate 684-guest ships to the Vista-class vessels carrying 1,200 guests, this marks another significant step in Oceania’s growth, without abandoning what makes them distinct in the luxury cruise market.

What Makes the Sonata Class Different

Oceania Sonata

The Sonata Class represents Oceania’s largest ships to date, carrying 1,390 guests across approximately 86,000 gross tons. That’s noticeably bigger than the Vista and Allura (67,000 GT, 1,200 guests), but the increase in size actually translates to more space per person. The Sonata will offer approximately 61.8 tons per passenger, compared to the Vista’s 55.8 tons per passenger. In practical terms, this means wider corridors, less crowded public spaces, and a more relaxed onboard atmosphere despite the higher guest count.

Here’s what stands out about the design philosophy:

Space and Suites Take Priority

Thirty percent of all accommodations will be suites, a significant jump that signals Oceania’s push further into the luxury segment. The ship will debut two brand-new suite categories plus completely reimagined Owner’s Suites. Every single accommodation, from entry-level staterooms to top-tier suites, will include a private veranda. No inside cabins, no compromises on ocean access.

Light-Filled Public Spaces

Oceania describes Sonata as blending “grand, light-filled spaces that inspire celebration with serene enclaves designed for relaxation.” Translation: they’re balancing social areas with quiet corners, recognizing that luxury travelers want options. Sometimes you want the buzz of a great restaurant or bar, other times you want to disappear with a book and a glass of wine.

The Dining Experience (Because It’s Oceania)

If you know anything about Oceania Cruises, you know their entire brand identity revolves around food. They’ve built their reputation on “The Finest Cuisine at Sea,” and Sonata will feature ten distinct culinary venues.

Confirmed favorites returning to the new ship:

The Grand Dining Room for elegant evening dining

Jacques, Oceania’s sophisticated French restaurant

Red Ginger, their pan-Asian venue

Polo Grill, classic steakhouse experience

Toscana, Italian specialties

But here’s where it gets interesting: Oceania specifically mentions “innovative new concepts” and “exclusive, never-before-featured-at-sea dining venues” coming to Sonata. They’re keeping those details under wraps for now, but this suggests the line is experimenting beyond their established formula.

For context, Oceania Vista and Allura already pushed boundaries with venues like Ember (contemporary American) and the Aquamar Kitchen (wellness-focused cuisine). Sonata’s new concepts could go even further, perhaps more intimate chef’s table experiences, specialized cuisine types, or innovative dining formats that haven’t appeared on cruise ships yet.

The Fincantieri Factor

Sonata is being built by Fincantieri, the Italian shipbuilder behind Marina, Riviera, Vista, and Allura. This matters because Fincantieri has proven they understand Oceania’s design language, that balance between accessible luxury and refined elegance without tipping into stuffy formality.

The shipyard’s track record with Oceania’s previous vessels suggests Sonata will feature the same attention to materials, finish quality, and spatial flow that made Vista and Allura feel more like boutique hotels than traditional cruise ships.

What We Don’t Know Yet (And Why That’s Intentional)

Oceania is rolling out details gradually, which is smart marketing. We know the ship exists, we know the capacity and general concept, but specifics on those new dining venues, the reimagined Owner’s Suites, and the two brand-new suite categories are still coming.

This phased reveal keeps interest high and gives the cruise line multiple opportunities to generate buzz between now and the August 2027 maiden voyage. Expect more announcements in the coming months as they flesh out details about:

Specific suite layouts and amenities

The new culinary concepts

Oceania Sonata itineraries and deployment regions (Mediterranean? Northern Europe? World cruises?)

Pricing structure and booking windows (early booking incentives are likely)

The Bigger Picture: Four Ships, Eight Years

Sonata isn’t alone. Oceania has four Sonata Class ships on order, scheduled for delivery in 2027, 2029, 2032, and 2035. This represents a massive investment in fleet expansion and a clear signal about where the company sees future demand.

The luxury cruise segment has been growing steadily, with travelers increasingly willing to pay premium prices for elevated experiences, better food, and more personalized service. Oceania is betting that demand will support not just one or two new ships, but a sustained buildout over the next decade.

Should You Wait for Sonata or Book Vista/Allura Now?

Here’s the practical question for travelers: if you’re considering an Oceania cruise, should you wait for Sonata’s 2027 debut or book one of their existing ships?

Book Vista or Allura now if: You want to cruise in 2025-2026, you’re happy with the proven design of Oceania’s current ships, or you prefer sailing on vessels that have worked out any launch-year quirks.

Wait for Sonata if: You want to be among the first to experience the new vessel, you’re intrigued by those unrevealed dining concepts, or you want the additional space and suite options the larger ship provides.

One consideration: maiden voyages and inaugural seasons often come with both perks (lower pricing to drive bookings, special events) and trade-offs (occasional service hiccups as crew settles in, minor technical adjustments). Oceania has a strong track record of smooth launches, but it’s worth weighing your priorities.

When comparing Oceania Sonata vs Vista or Allura, the key difference isn’t just size, it’s the space-per-passenger ratio and the expanded suite inventory. If you’ve sailed Vista and loved it, Sonata will feel familiar but more spacious.

How to Stay Updated

Interested in being among the first to sail Oceania Sonata? Contact our team to get on the early notification list. As a preferred Oceania partner, we’ll have access to booking windows and suite inventory before general availability, plus we can help you navigate the best cabin locations and lock in early booking perks.

The Bottom Line

Oceania Sonata represents an evolution, not a revolution. The cruise line is expanding capacity and enhancing amenities while maintaining the core elements that define their brand: exceptional food, destination-rich itineraries, and ships that feel intimate despite carrying over 1,000 guests.

For travelers who’ve felt that 600-guest ships are too small but 3,000-guest mega-ships are overwhelming, the Sonata Class might hit the sweet spot. Large enough for variety and amenities, small enough to access smaller ports and maintain personalized service.

We’ll be watching for those dining venue reveals. Because let’s be honest, with Oceania, it’s always about the food.

For travelers dreaming of gliding along the Rhine past medieval castles or cruising the Danube through the heart of old-world Europe, this news couldn’t be better. More ships mean more availability, more departure dates, and quite possibly access to new itineraries that weren’t previously possible.

Why Does AmaWaterways’ Expansion Matter for River Cruise Travelers?

More Availability During Peak Season

If you’ve ever tried to book a popular Rhine or Danube itinerary for summer or Christmas markets season, you know how quickly AmaWaterways sells out. Their ships carry just 156 guests maximum, creating an intimate experience but limited availability. Eight additional ships means significantly more opportunities to secure your preferred dates, especially during those coveted peak travel periods.

Brand New Vessels

Eight new ships means fresh accommodations and the satisfaction of being among the first guests to experience these newest additions to the AmaWaterways fleet.

Potential for New Itineraries

With expanded capacity, AmaWaterways may introduce new routes or extend existing itineraries to less-traveled rivers and regions. This could mean access to hidden gems in European river cruising that were previously unavailable due to fleet limitations.

What Makes AmaWaterways Worth the Wait

The Famous Twin Balcony Staterooms

AmaWaterways revolutionized river cruise staterooms with their twin balcony design – both a French balcony with floor-to-ceiling windows and a private outdoor balcony. It’s the best of both worlds: panoramic views from inside your stateroom and fresh air when you want it. Most other river lines make you choose one or the other.

Included Excursions That Actually Matter

Every AmaWaterways cruise includes up to seven shore excursions per day, tailored to different interests and activity levels. Want a gentle walking tour of a medieval town? They’ve got you covered. Prefer an invigorating bike ride through vineyards? That’s included too. More adventurous experiences like truffle hunting in France or hiking in the Wachau Valley? Also included.

Bikes on Every Ship

Speaking of biking, every AmaWaterways ship carries complimentary bikes for guests. This isn’t just a nice amenity – it’s transformational for experiencing European river destinations. Cycling along the Danube through Austria’s wine country or pedaling through tulip fields in Holland creates memories that traditional bus tours simply can’t match.

Culinary Excellence with Local Focus

AmaWaterways’ chefs create menus featuring regional specialties and locally-sourced ingredients. Dining aboard feels more like discovering authentic European cuisine than eating generic cruise food. Their wine program is equally impressive, featuring selections from regions you’re actually visiting.

The Strategic Timing of This Expansion

Catherine Powell, AmaWaterways’ CEO, attributes this massive expansion to “surging demand from guests eager to discover river cruising and Europe’s beautiful rivers.” This isn’t corporate speak – the numbers back it up. River cruising has emerged as the fastest-growing segment of the cruise industry, particularly among travelers seeking more intimate, culturally-focused experiences.

The timing also reflects broader travel trends. Post-pandemic travelers increasingly prioritize meaningful experiences over mass tourism. River cruising delivers exactly that: smaller groups, deeper cultural immersion, and access to destinations that ocean ships simply cannot reach.

Ordering eight ships represents a significant investment and signals AmaWaterways’ confidence in sustained demand growth. River ships are expensive to build and operate, so this expansion reflects serious market analysis and long-term strategic planning. For travelers, this means AmaWaterways is here to stay and committed to maintaining their position as a river cruising leader.

What Do We Know About AmaWaterways’ 8 New Ships?

AmaWaterways has not yet released specific details about the new vessels, with further information expected in the coming months. What we do know is that these ships will maintain the company’s commitment to “elegant design and immersive experiences” that define the AmaWaterways brand.

Based on the company’s track record, these new ships will likely feature the same amenities that have made AmaWaterways a leader in river cruising: the famous twin balcony staterooms, award-winning cuisine, complimentary bikes, wellness hosts, and the comprehensive included shore excursion program that offers up to seven different options per day.

How Should You Plan for AmaWaterways’ New Ships?

Book Early for New Ships

When AmaWaterways announces specific new ship details and inaugural itineraries, expect high demand. New ship launches generate excitement, and maiden voyage cruises often sell out quickly.

Existing Ships Remain Excellent Options

Don’t wait if you’re ready to travel now. AmaWaterways’ current fleet delivers exceptional experiences, and this expansion doesn’t diminish the quality of existing ships. River cruising demand is high enough that waiting for new ships might mean missing preferred dates on current vessels.

Consider Shoulder Seasons

With increased capacity coming online, shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) may offer even better availability and value. These periods often provide ideal weather with fewer crowds at popular destinations.

The Bigger Picture

This expansion reflects river cruising’s evolution from niche market to mainstream vacation choice. AmaWaterways’ growth signals that intimate, culturally-focused travel experiences aren’t just surviving in today’s market – they’re thriving.

For travelers considering their first river cruise, this news provides reassurance that the industry is stable and growing. For river cruising veterans, it means more opportunities to explore new itineraries and experience the latest innovations in river ship design.

The European rivers that have flowed through history for millennia are about to welcome eight new floating ambassadors of exploration and discovery. Whether you’re dreaming of Christmas markets along the Rhine, vineyard cycling in Burgundy, or castle-hopping along the Danube, AmaWaterways’ expansion means those dreams just became more accessible.

When you choose an Oceania cruise, you’re already getting something special: intimate ships that carry fewer than 1,250 guests, cuisine crafted by Master Chef Jacques Pépin, and itineraries designed for genuine cultural exploration. Starting September 17, 2025, that exceptional experience just got even better.

A Meaningful New Choice for Every Guest

Oceania’s expanded Your World Included program now offers every guest a choice between two valuable benefits:

Shore Excursion Credit (Up to $600 Per Person) This generous credit can be applied to any of Oceania’s extensive shore excursion offerings. Imagine using it toward experiences like private cooking classes with local chefs in Tuscany, helicopter tours over Norway’s dramatic fjords, intimate wine tastings at premier Bordeaux estates, or small-group cultural tours led by local experts—all part of their collection of over 8,000 guided tours worldwide.

Complimentary Wine & Beer Service Thoughtfully selected wines and international beers served by the glass during lunch and dinner, perfectly paired with Oceania’s acclaimed cuisine.

This enhancement is permanent, not promotional, reflecting Oceania’s commitment to delivering exceptional value.

What’s Always Been Included

Oceania’s comprehensive inclusions already set them apart in the luxury cruise market:

Culinary Excellence:

All specialty restaurants with no cover charges

24-hour room service

Menus designed by Jacques Pépin’s culinary team, prepared fresh to order

Modern Conveniences:

Unlimited high-speed Starlink WiFi throughout your voyage

All shipboard gratuities

Laundry services

Thoughtful Touches:

Premium beverages including specialty coffees, teas, and artisanal waters

Fitness classes and wellness amenities

Gourmet ice cream and juice bars

Why Discerning Travelers Choose Oceania

Intimate Ship Experience With a maximum capacity of 1,250 guests, Oceania ships offer a refined atmosphere where you’ll never feel crowded. This smaller size also allows access to boutique ports that larger ships simply cannot reach.

Culinary Leadership Jacques Pépin’s influence goes far beyond menu design. His culinary philosophy, emphasizing fresh, regional ingredients and classic techniques, is evident in every meal, from casual poolside dining to elegant specialty restaurants.

Destination-Focused Itineraries Oceania visits over 600 ports across 100+ countries, with longer stays and overnight ports that allow for meaningful exploration. You’ll have time to discover local culture, not just tourist attractions.

Relaxed Elegance The atmosphere aboard Oceania ships is sophisticated yet welcoming: think country club comfort rather than formal cruise traditions. Dress codes are relaxed, and the focus is on genuine hospitality.

The Value of True Inclusion

Beyond the monetary savings (which are substantial) the real benefit lies in the freedom to fully enjoy your vacation. When shore excursions and beverages are included, you can make choices based on interest rather than budget, leading to richer, more authentic experiences.

This comprehensive approach to luxury cruising means fewer decisions about add-ons and more time focusing on what matters: the destinations, the cuisine, and the memories you’re creating.

Planning Your Oceania Experience

These enhancements make Oceania’s already compelling value proposition even stronger. Popular itineraries are filling earlier, particularly:

Mediterranean voyages during the ideal weather months of late spring and early fall

Northern European summers with extended daylight hours

Cultural immersion cruises through Asia and the Americas

The intimate nature of Oceania’s ships means fewer available cabins, and these new inclusions are generating increased interest from travelers who value thoughtful luxury.

Ready to Book Your Oceania Cruise?

Oceania Cruises has long been recognized for delivering sophisticated travel experiences that go beyond typical cruise expectations. These latest enhancements simply reinforce their position as a leader in small-ship luxury.

We’d be happy to help you explore Oceania’s itineraries and find the voyage that best matches your travel interests. Our team can also ensure you’re taking advantage of the best current offers and promotions.
